Opportunity - UMIP Fellows

UMIP, The University of Manchester’s technology transfer office, are currently recruiting early stage researchers and full-time postgraduate students from the University to join our UMIP Fellows Programme. UMIP Fellows  will be required to work in their spare time alongside UMIP’s Commercialisation Executives to undertake a range of time critical short project assignments. Commitment and availability is required for up to 8 hours per week to undertake paid project work.

Following the launch of the NRN in the Policy@Manchester week in October 2012, we are pleased to invite you to attend the second NRN event to take place on 7^th of May 2013. As an inter-disciplinary forum for research students and post-doctoral researchers, the main theme of this event is ‘Challenges in policy evaluation’. All PGRs and post-docs who are working on policy or looking to have an impact on policy are very welcome to attend.

 

The essentials

What: Research presentations, ‘open space discussion’ and free lunch

Who: Research students and post-docs from the University of Manchester researching policy or doing research relevant to policy making

Call for abstracts

Those interested in presenting their research are invited to send us an abstract for a 15 minute paper. Abstract should not exceed 300 words and expected to be linked to the main theme of this event, ‘challenged in policy evaluation’. In addition, applicants are also required to provide the following information in their emails:

• Name
• Position (e.g., MPhil/ PhD/ Post-doc)
• Department and faculty
• Research topic
• If applicable: dietary requests

The deadline for abstract submission is 20^th of March 2013 and notification of acceptance will be emailed during the first week of April.

Insight into Broadcasting & Journalism

Monday 25^th March: University of Manchester, 9am – 5pm

This is a one day interactive course exclusively for University of Manchester students (undergraduates and postgraduates).  You will work in small groups with guest tutors, professionals from the Media, to produce real content for radio, TV or written media (your choice).  It is your opportunity to get some practical experience to put on your CV and really is an excellent opportunity for anyone considering a career in the Media. 

This year we are subsidising the cost of this course to offer you a place for just £15.  This includes course fees and materials, lunch and refreshments.  Places are limited but the course will only run if we can guarantee minimum numbers.

IT Services provide a comprehensive training portfolio in support of research computing and data analysis. From February the following 1-day training courses, each with hands-on exercises to ensure a full understanding of the topic, are available to researchers (staff + PGR) at the University.

Optimisation and Parallelisation (Wed 20 Feb) - learning how to get codes to run faster and in parallel
High Throughput Computing using Condor (Mon 4 Mar) - learn how to do parameter sweeps (Monte Carlo)

Introduction to OpenCL (Fri 8 Mar) - programming for GPUs and CPUs

Salford Postgraduate Annual Research Conference (SPARC) 2013: Theory, Practice, Impact

Who is it for? Postgraduate Researchers at all stages of research.

Call for abstracts deadline: 11 March 2013

SPARC is a forum for developing research, offering a space for postgraduate researchers from all disciplines to exchange ideas. There are several presentation formats to choose from, and it’s a great way of developing presentation skills, testing ideas with new audiences, getting feedback, and meeting researchers from other disciplines and universities.

Proposals for presentations are invited which directly address the contribution (or potential contribution) in relation to any of the conference themes: theory, practice and impact. This could include (but is not limited to) any of the following:

• advancement in theoretical understanding, for example challenging, developing or reframing debates


• enhancements to practice, for example new applications of theory; enhancement of techniques, technologies, skills


• beneficial impacts on society, economy, culture or the environment.

 If so, you should log-on to the Postgraduate Online Writing Clinic. This is a forum which gives postgraduate students (Home and Overseas from all faculties) the chance to ask questions about any aspect of academic writing.

 The live writing clinic is an online, cross-faculty resource for postgraduate students at the University of Manchester. It is a drop-in facility which allows you to ask any questions you might have regarding academic writing.

 The clinics will usually take place between 2.00 – 3.00pm on Wednesdays.

 To access the online clinic at time shown above, follow the link below:

 This will launch Adobe Connect and a login page. Enter your name and School (e.g. Simon: MACE). Then click the 'Enter Room' button and you will enter the clinic.
