Teaching & Learning Showcase.

The Faculty of Humanities will be hosting its next Teaching and Learning Showcase event on Tuesday 25 June 2013 from 1 - 4.45pm. The event will be held in the Humanities Bridgeford Street Building, with stalls and refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits) in the Hanson Room.

There will be 10 sessions available for participants to attend, each lasting 30 minutes and structured around a presentation followed by time for questions and answers. Topics at the event will include employability, assessment and feedback and enhancing student contact time.   

If you haven’t been to one of our Showcases before, please do try to come along to this one! Previous attendees have found the event interesting and inspiring, and a good opportunity to discuss practice initiatives with colleagues.

Pathways - Friday 7th June 2013

Pathways, Friday 7^th June 2013, Renold Building (Sackville Campus), 9am – 4pm

This is your opportunity to explore and consider the range of career opportunities available to you once you’ve completed your studies.

The event will offer you the chance to hear from a wide range of speakers (from varied backgrounds, roles and organisations), all of whom have a PhD and advice to share, as well as some employers.  Throughout the day we will organise around 20 different sessions covering topics such as ‘Careers in Academia’, ‘Research roles outside universities’, ‘Non academic roles in universities’; ‘Finding work overseas’, ‘Staying to work in the UK’; ‘Changing your career path’, ‘Marketing your PhD and your skills’, ‘What do employers look for in PhD applicants?  and many more.  

You will be able to make connections with our speakers and also with fellow PhD students from across the University - every year around 350 students attend the event.

Feedback from previous events shows that attendees leave feeling more positive and confident about the path they are pursuing, clearer about the options ahead of them and generally inspired.

Marie Curie Research Fellowships in Sweden

COFAS 2 – Call for proposals, Marie Curie Fellowships in Sweden, FAS Incoming International Postdoc fellowships (FIIP)

·         COFAS 2 is FAS' International postdoc fellowship programme.

·         Deadline for submission of applications is 29 May 2013 at 17:00 CET.

·         FAS supports research in the areas of working life, public health and welfare.

·         The purpose of funding International Incoming postdocs is to give qualified researchers opportunity for knowledge and competence exchange with the Swedish research society.

·         Applicants can apply for up to 24 consecutive months at the host institution. Applicants who find it difficult to spend longer periods of time abroad, e.g. for family reasons, may divide the time with work at the institution in their country of origin.

The grants include:

·         Living, mobility and travel allowance, incl. 35% overhead with 950 000 SEK per year (approx. 94 500 EUR for living, 13 500 EUR for mobility and 2500 EUR for travel)

·         Family allowance 50 000 SEK for each dependent per year (approx. 5,500 EUR/year for each dependent)

·         Research cost contribution, which amounts to 50 000 SEK per year (approx. 5500 EUR/year)

·         Career Grant 5000 SEK (approx. 550 EUR) per seminar, for participation in Career Coaching seminars arranged by FAS

News in the COFAS 2 programme

• Introducing family allowance This change provide better conditions for researchers to go abroad and bring their family on their postdoc period. COFAS 2 is introducing a substantial Family allowance, by offering 50 000 SEK (approx. 5500 euro) per dependent per year.
• Wider Career window. Applicants with a PhD exam obtained during the last 5 years (childcare and military services subtracted), or applicants being in the last stages of their PhD preparation, but that will have their PhD at the time of recruitment (contract signature), are eligible to receive fellowships in the COFAS 2 programme
• Repatriation period. Now financed by FAS to secure contract extension due to national regulations for parental leave
• Work part-time. Fellows with child-care responsibilities can apply to work part-time during the fellowship or divide their fellowships in several stays, with the maximum time not exceeding 36 months (not including the repatriation)

Opportunity - UMIP Fellows

UMIP, The University of Manchester’s technology transfer office, are currently recruiting early stage researchers and full-time postgraduate students from the University to join our UMIP Fellows Programme. UMIP Fellows  will be required to work in their spare time alongside UMIP’s Commercialisation Executives to undertake a range of time critical short project assignments. Commitment and availability is required for up to 8 hours per week to undertake paid project work.

Following the launch of the NRN in the Policy@Manchester week in October 2012, we are pleased to invite you to attend the second NRN event to take place on 7^th of May 2013. As an inter-disciplinary forum for research students and post-doctoral researchers, the main theme of this event is ‘Challenges in policy evaluation’. All PGRs and post-docs who are working on policy or looking to have an impact on policy are very welcome to attend.

Call for abstracts

Those interested in presenting their research are invited to send us an abstract for a 15 minute paper. Abstract should not exceed 300 words and expected to be linked to the main theme of this event, ‘challenged in policy evaluation’. In addition, applicants are also required to provide the following information in their emails:

• Department and faculty
• Research topic
• If applicable: dietary requests

The deadline for abstract submission is 20^th of March 2013 and notification of acceptance will be emailed during the first week of April.

Insight into Broadcasting & Journalism

Monday 25^th March: University of Manchester, 9am – 5pm

This is a one day interactive course exclusively for University of Manchester students (undergraduates and postgraduates).  You will work in small groups with guest tutors, professionals from the Media, to produce real content for radio, TV or written media (your choice).  It is your opportunity to get some practical experience to put on your CV and really is an excellent opportunity for anyone considering a career in the Media. 

This year we are subsidising the cost of this course to offer you a place for just £15.  This includes course fees and materials, lunch and refreshments.  Places are limited but the course will only run if we can guarantee minimum numbers.
